Pre-K Programs
Give your three and four year old children a head start at playing an instrument by offering them Intro to Piano, only at the Mike Risko Music School. This is a special program we have designed which enables nursery school aged children to begin playing an instrument. These private lessons are structured like a regular piano lesson but more time is spent covering the beginning elements of the piano using age appropriate books and exercises. Emphasis is placed on having fun and understanding the introductory concepts which gives pre-kindergartners a strong foundation in music. Practice assignments are exciting and energizing and geared towards minimizing pressure on the child.

In addition to learning counting, basic note reading and other important elements of music like bass and treble clef, the staff and the names of the keys, students will explore different kinds of sounds, learn about numbers and letters and do some singing. Parents are invited to participate in these lessons so they can help their child practice at home. They are taught skills to help their child progress.

Piano is the perfect starter instrument. It is physically very easy to play. It is also one of the only instruments that a student does not have to learn to hold. Piano lessons cover most basic theory which will transfer over to another instrument if a child wishes to add a second instrument or switch instruments when he or she is older.

This introductory package is for children who have not yet entered kindergarten. These lessons are recommended for three or four year olds and reading is not a prerequisite.

Hint and Tips:
Giving your pre-k student a successful music lesson experience.

Any extra curricular activity that your child is exposed to when they are in nursery school has a very specific goal. It is to get them used to either doing the activity when they are older, or to help them experience different things so they develop interests when they can make their own choices. It is important to keep these experiences positive. Music lessons are a great way to provide your child with a positive experience. Our lessons are one on one which gives a student an added benefit in that the lesson can be directed at the students ability. Every pre-k student can and will have a positive experience if we all do a few simple things.

It is important to remember that the goals of the pre-k lessons are not the same as the goal of a traditional lesson. The goal is to provide the child with all the introductory elements of the piano and to make sure that through repetition, they are absorbing them. The idea is to move slowly through these fundamentals and to build on them at each lesson. A parents job is not to sit at the piano and practice songs at this stage but is to find ways to present these fundamentals at home.
